A jet engine is an engine that discharges a fast moving jet of fluid to generate thrust in accordance with Newton's third law of motion. This broad definition of jet engines includes turbojets, turbofans, rockets, ramjets, pulse jets and pump-jets, but in common usage, the term generally refers to a gas turbine Brayton cycle engine, an engine with a rotary compressor powered by a turbine, with the leftover power providing thrust. Jet engines are so familiar to the modern world that gas turbines are sometimes mistakenly referred to as a particular application of a jet engine, rather than the other way around. Most jet engines are internal combustion engines but non combusting forms exist also.

Microsoft Jet Engine (Microsoft Joint Engine Technology Engine) ist eine 1992 eingeführte, relationale Datenbank-Engine für Windows Betriebssysteme. Dabei ist es interessant, dass Microsoft nicht nur eine, sondern zwei vollkommen unabhängige Versionen der Jet entwickelte: Red und Blue.

Strahltriebwerke (auch Düsentriebwerke oder Strahlturbinen) sind Gasturbinen, die vor allem als Triebwerke verwendet werden und nach dem Prinzip des Rückstoßantriebes arbeiten. Strahltriebwerke saugen die Umgebungsluft an und stoßen die Verbrennungsprodukte und zum Teil Luft als Antriebsstrahl wieder aus, wobei durch den Rückstoß eine Schubkraft erzeugt wird. Weil im Unterschied zum Raketentriebwerk der für die Verbrennung notwendige Sauerstoff der angesaugten Luft entnommen wird, spricht man auch von luftatmenden Triebwerken.

Silnik odrzutowy to silnik działający na zasadzie wyrzucania z dużą prędkością strumienia gazów, co zapewnia ciąg do przodu na podstawie trzeciego prawa dynamiki Newtona. Potocznie przez silnik odrzutowy rozumie się najczęściej silniki turboodrzutowe i  turbowentylatorowe. Podstawą teoretyczną pracy silnika odrzutowego jest obieg Braytona-Joule'a.

Il motore a getto o motore jet è un particolare tipo di motore a reazione spesso usato come propulsore negli aeroplani. Anche detto esoreattore (perché per funzionare ha bisogno di aria, fornita appunto dall'esterno e gli inglesi, amanti della semplicità, lo chiamano air breathing engine, letteralmente motore che respira aria), si distingue dagli altri motori a reazione (i motori a razzo o endoreattori) per la caratteristica di utilizzare l'aria esterna come comburente.
