Jaundice, also known as icterus (attributive adjective: "icteric"), is a yellowing of the skin, conjunctiva (a clear covering over the sclera, or whites of the eyes) and mucous membranes caused by hyperbilirubinemia (increased levels of bilirubin in red blooded animals). Usually the concentration of bilirubin in the blood must exceed 2–3 mg/dL for the coloration to be easily visible. Jaundice comes from the French word jaune, meaning yellow. Jaundice typically appears in a 'top to bottom' progression (starting with the face, progressing toward the feet), and resolves in a 'bottom to top' manner.

Der Ikterus (gr. ΐκτερος, en. jaundice), auch Gelbsucht genannt, ist ein Symptom, welches bei mehreren unterschiedlichen Erkrankungen auftreten kann. Er beschreibt eine Gelbfärbung von Haut, Schleimhäuten sowie der Lederhaut des Auges durch eine erhöhte Konzentration von Bilirubin.Dem Ikterus liegt eine Störung im Bilirubinstoffwechsel zugrunde. Bilirubin ist ein Abbauprodukt des roten Blutfarbstoffs Hämoglobin. Durch vermehrten Anfall oder verminderte Ausscheidung des Bilirubins kommt es zunächst zum Ansteigen der Serumkonzentration (sogenannte Hyperbilirubinämie) und anschließend zum Austritt durch das Gefäßendothel mit Einlagerung im Körpergewebe.

Si definisce ittero la colorazione giallastra della pelle, della sclera e delle membrane causata dall'eccessivo innalzamento dei livelli di bilirubina nel sangue. Affinché l'ittero sia visibile il livello deve superare 3-5 mg/dL. È una condizione parafisiologica nel neonato, mentre è frequentemente segno di patologia nell'adulto.
