Israel (, Yisra'el), officially the State of Israel (Hebrew: , Medinat Yisra'el; , Dawlat Isrā'īl), is a country in Southwest Asia located on the southeastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. It has borders with Lebanon in the north, Syria and Jordan in the east, and Egypt on the southwest, and contains geographically diverse features within its relatively small area. The West Bank and Gaza Strip, which are partially administrated by the Palestinian National Authority, are also adjacent. With a population of about 7.2 million, the majority of whom are Jews, Israel is the world's only Jewish state. It is also home to Arab Muslims, Christians and Druze, as well as other religious and ethnic minority groups. Jerusalem is the nation's capital, seat of government, and largest city.

Israël est un pays du Proche-Orient situé sur la côte orientale de la Méditerranée. Depuis sa création en 1948, il se définit comme l’État du peuple juif, héritier de l’Israël biblique. Il est le seul pays où l’hébreu est langue officielle ; son régime politique est de type démocratie parlementaire. L’État d’Israël a connu, depuis sa création en 1948, de successifs conflits armés avec les pays arabes voisins.

Lo Stato d'Israele (in ebraico: , Medinat Yisra'el; in arabo: دولة اسرائيل, Dawlat Isrā'īl) è uno stato del Vicino Oriente che si affaccia sul Mar Mediterraneo. Confina con l'Egitto a Sud, la Giordania a Est, il Libano a Nord e la Siria a Nord-Est.La popolazione nel 2006 supera i sette milioni di abitanti. È l'unico Stato a maggioranza ebraica al mondo (circa il 76,4 ella popolazione), con una consistente minoranza di arabi (in prevalenza di religione musulmana, ma anche cristiana o drusa). L'attuale stato d'Israele è sorto il 14 maggio 1948, alla scadenza del Mandato britannico della Palestina. La Legge Fondamentale del 1980 (Israele non ha una vera e propria Costituzione) afferma che la capitale è Gerusalemme, dove risiedono la Knesset (il parlamento israeliano), il Governo, il Presidente e la Corte Suprema. Tuttavia, lo status di Gerusalemme è contestato dalla Autorità Nazionale Palestinese (che rivendica la parte orientale della città quale sua capitale) e non è riconosciuto dalla Comunità internazionale. Tutti gli Stati che hanno relazioni diplomatiche con Israele mantengono infatti le proprie ambasciate a Tel Aviv o nelle vicinanze.

Israël grenst aan Libanon, Syrië, Jordanië, Egypte en de Palestijnse Gebieden. Israël heeft een kust aan zowel de Middellandse Zee als aan de Rode Zee en vormt daarmee - samen met Egypte - een continentale brug van Azië en Europa met Afrika.
