Isotropy is uniformity in all orientations; it is derived from the Greek iso (equal) and tropos (direction). Precise definitions depend on the subject area. Exceptions, or inequalities, are frequently indicated by the prefix an, hence anisotropy. Anisotropy is also used to describe situations where properties vary systematically, dependent on direction. Isotropic radiation has the same intensity regardless of the direction of measurement, and an isotropic field exerts the same action regardless of how the test particle is oriented.

Isotropie (von isos gleich; und tropos Drehung, Richtung) bezeichnet die Unabhängigkeit einer Eigenschaft von der Richtung.

Isotrop strålning innebär att strålningen har samma intensitet i olika riktningar; ett isotropt fält betyder att fältet har samma verkan oavsett hur partikeln är orienterad.

Izotropia (izotropowość) (gr. isos 'równy, jednakowy'; trópos 'zwrot, obrót') to brak różnic właściwości fizycznych materiałów, takich jak np: rozszerzalność termiczna, przewodnictwo elektryczne czy współczynnik załamania światła, niezależnie od tego w jakim kierunku są one mierzone. Przeciwieństwem tego pojęcia jest anizotropia.
