island country

An island country is a country that is wholly confined to an island, several islands, an island group or several island groups, and has no territory on the mainland of a continent. Forty-seven of the world's countries are island countries (2007), including most of the smallest ones.Island countries can be divided in two approximate groups. A group of large, relatively populous nations which are usually close to a continent including: Japan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Cuba, the United Kingdom, Madagascar, and Indonesia. These countries typically share cultural and political similarities with their continental neighbours. Island locations have frequently been advantageous, providing isolation from invasion and the the maritime abilities of the population gave advantage in regional and international trade.

Un État insulaire est un État indépendant dont le territoire est uniquement comporté d'une ou plusieurs îles, n'est pas implanté sur une masse continentale et comporte ou non une frontière terrestre. Sur les 192 États reconnus par les Nations unies, 45 sont considérés comme insulaires. L'Australie n'est pas comptabilisée car considérée comme une masse continentale.

Państwo wyspiarskie – państwo w całości położone na pojedynczej wyspie lub grupie wysp i nie posiadające żadnego terytorium na stałym lądzie kontynentalnym.Państwa wyspiarskie można generalnie podzielić na dwie grupy. Jedna to państwa, które są stosunkowo duże i leżą zwykle blisko kontynentu. Są to m.in. Japonia, Sri Lanka, Kuba, Filipiny, Wielka Brytania, Islandia, Madagaskar i Indonezja. Te kraje są podobne pod względem kultury i polityki do swoich kontynentalnych sąsiadów. Dzięki swojemu położeniu i wielkości często opierały się inwazji i stały się ważnymi ośrodkami handlu.

En östat är en stat som enbart består av en eller flera öar. En östat saknar område på fastlandet. Exempel på östater kan vara Cypern eller Sri Lanka.
