Islam (Arabic: ) is a monotheistic religion originating with the teachings of Muhammad, a 7th-century Arab religious and political figure. The word Islam means "submission", or the total surrender of oneself to God (Arabic: ). An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim, meaning "one who submits (to God)". There are between 900 million to 1.5 billion Muslims on the basis of self-identification, making Islam the second-largest religion in the world, after Christianity.

L'islam est une religion monothéiste, professée par Mahomet en Arabie au dont les fidèles sont appelés aujourd'hui musulmans, ce qui correspond à une transposition de leur manière de s'appeler en langue arabe. Chronologiquement considéré comme le troisième grand courant monothéiste de la famille des religions abrahamiques, il se distingue du judaïsme et du christianisme avec lesquels il possède un certain nombre d'éléments en communs ainsi que du baha'isme qui prétend lui succéder. L'islam se veut être une révélation arabe de la religion d'Adam, de Noé (appelé Nouh en arabe) et de tous les prophètes. Ainsi l'islam se présente comme un retour à la religion d'Abraham (appelé Ibrahim par les musulmans) du point de vue de la croyance, le Coran définissant l'islam comme étant la voie d'Ibrahim (millata Ibrahim).

Der Islam ist eine monotheistische abrahamitische Religion, die sich streng vom Polytheismus und auch von der christlichen Vorstellung von Inkarnation und Dreifaltigkeit abgrenzt. Bestimmendes Element ist die Lehre vom tauhid, der Einheit Gottes.Das arabische Wort für „Gott“, „Gottheit“ ist ilah . Die Pluralform ist:Aliha bekannt aus der Schahada (siehe unten): Lā ilāha illa ʾllāh(u): „Es gibt keinen Gott außer Gott“. Als der persönliche und damit wichtigste Namen Gottes gilt jedoch im arabischsprachigen Raum und unter Muslimen . Das Wort Allah steht außerhalb von arabischsprachigen Gebieten für den Gott der Muslime.

Początkowym celem islamu i nauczania proroka Mahometa było połączenie wszystkich ludów arabskich w jedną wielką rodzinę muzułmańską (arab. muslim ajadani), jednak z czasem rozprzestrzenił się na cały świat.

L'Islam (in arabo إسلام da pronunciare "Islàm", che significa sottomissione, abbandono [a Dio]), è una religione monoteista sorta a Mecca (Penisola Araba) nel VII secolo in seguito alla predicazione di Maometto (in arabo محمد , Muhammad), considerato dai musulmani l'ultimo e definitivo profeta inviato da Dio (in arabo الله, Allāh) al mondo intero, cioè a tutti i popoli, incluse le comunità religiose precedenti, di cui peraltro si accettano gli assunti e i profeti (da Adamo a Noè, da Abramo a Mosè, fino a Gesù), sebbene si ritenga che le rispettive religioni istituite da Dio per mezzo di tali profeti siano state alterate dal fluire del tempo e dalla malizia degli uomini. L'Islam, secondo i musulmani, è l'ultima religione celeste istituita da Dio ed è destinata a perdurare, inalterata, fino al Giorno del Giudizio. Essendo universalistica ed egalitaria, la religione islamica tende ad accogliere tutti gli esseri umani, senza distinzioni di sorta.
