Iodine (, or ; from "violet"), is a chemical element that has the symbol I and atomic number 53. Chemically, iodine is the least reactive of the halogens, and the most electropositive halogen after astatine. Iodine is primarily used in medicine, photography and dyes. It is required in trace amounts by most living organisms.

Iod (auch: Jod, Elementsymbol I) ist ein chemisches Element. Es steht im Periodensystem der Elemente in der 17. Gruppe (früher 7. Hauptgruppe, VIIA) und ist ein Halogen. Der Name leitet sich vom altgriechischen Wort „Iodes“ (ιώο-ειδης) für „veilchenfarbig“ ab: Die beim Erhitzen von Iod freigesetzten Dämpfe sind violett.

È un elemento che, in tracce, è coinvolto nel metabolismo di molti esseri viventi, compreso l'uomo. Chimicamente, lo iodio è il meno reattivo ed il meno elettronegativo degli alogeni. Viene principalmente impiegato in medicina, in fotografia e nella produzione di pigmenti.

Jodium of jood is een scheikundig element met symbool I en atoomnummer 53. Het is een violet-donkergrijze halogeen. Als vaste stof wordt het soms als di-jood aangeduid aangezien het net als andere halogenen in moleculen van twee jodiumatomen I2 voorkomt
