Investment has different meanings in finance and economics. Finance investment is putting money into something with the expectation of gain, that upon thorough analysis, has a high degree of security for the principal amount, as well as security of return, within an expected period of time. In contrast putting money into something with an expectation of gain without thorough analysis, without security of principal, and without security of return is speculation or gambling. As such, those shareholders who fail to thoroughly analyze their stock purchases, such as owners of mutual funds, could well be called speculators. Indeed, given the efficient market hypothesis, which implies that a thorough analysis of stock data is irrational, all rational shareholders are, by definition, not investors, but speculators.

In der wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Literatur versteht man im Allgemeinen unter Investition (kurz ; englisch: „investment“) die „Verwendung finanzieller Mittel“ (Wöhe) oder die Anlage von Kapital in Vermögen bzw. Geldkapital, um damit neue Geldgewinne, oder höhere Geldgewinne aus bestehenden Unternehmungen zu bekommen. Sie ist Teil des Geschäftsprozesses. Im weiteren Sinn gehören dazu neben kurzfristigen Anlagen auch Investitionen in Wertpapiere. Enger gefasst und am gebräuchlichsten ist der Begriff bei langfristigen Sachanlagen. Als langfristig kann dabei angesehen werden, wenn das Produktionsmittel das laufende Geschäftsjahr überdauert. Investitionen umfassen dabei einen weiten Bereich von Immobilien über Geschäftsfahrzeuge und Maschinen bis zur Büroeinrichtung und können von öffentlichen wie auch privaten Unternehmungen getätigt werden.

L’investissement, pour l'économiste, est la transformation d'un capital, entendu dans le sens de ressource monétaire, en capital fixe, un bien d'équipement ou de l'immobilier par exemple ; pour le financier il recouvre la notion de placement à moyen ou long terme dans des actifs financiers. Pour le comptable, l'investissement est synonyme d'immobilisation qu'elle soit corporelle, incorporelle ou financière.

En investering är en kapitalinsats som förväntas leda till framtida avkastning. Kapitalinsatsen sker ofta som en utgift i pengar, men kan även vara en insats av andra former av resurser. Avkastningen kan antingen komma i form av ökade intäkter eller i form av minskade kostnader.
