Invertebrates are animal species that do not develop a vertebral column. This in effect includes all animals apart from the subphylum Vertebrata. Familiar examples of invertebrates include insects, snails, and starfish. Taxonomically speaking "invertebrate" is no more than a term of convenience; only about 3% of animal species include a vertebral column in their anatomy. In other words all animals except those in the chordate subphylum Vertebrata (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals) are regarded as invertebrates. What is more, many an individual invertebrate taxon has a greater number and variety of species than the entire subphylum Vertebrata, In fact some of the so-called invertebrata, such as the Chaetognatha and Hemichordata, are more closely related the Chordata than to other invertebrate phyla.

Als Wirbellose oder Invertebrata (Synonym: Evertebrata) bezeichnet man alle Tiere ohne eine Wirbelsäule. Zu dieser informellen Gruppe (Formtaxon) von Lebewesen gehört die Mehrzahl aller bekannten Tierarten. Sie werden der Verwandtschaftsgruppe der Wirbeltiere (Vertebrata) gegenüber gestellt.

Ryggradslösa djur eller evertebrater (Evertebrata) är en sammanfattande beteckning på alla de djurgrupper som inte ingår i ryggradsdjuren och inkluderar till exempel blötdjur, leddjur, armfotingar, nässeldjur och många fler djurgrupper. Gruppen är parafyletisk och omfattar cirka 97% av alla djurarter. Begreppet saknar värde inom Taxonomi.

Bezkręgowce (Invertebrata) - sztuczna jednostka systematyczna, grupująca zwierzęta wielokomórkowe nie mające szkieletu wewnętrznego w postaci kręgosłupa. Mianem tym tradycyjnie określa się wszystkie zwierzęta "stojące na niższym poziomie ewolucyjnym" od kręgowców, a więc m.in. mięczaki, skorupiaki, owady. Jednostka ta została po raz pierwszy użyta przez Lamarcka, należy jednak jeszcze raz podkreślić, że jest sztuczna i grupując zupełnie odmienne od siebie zwierzęta, sugeruje wspólne korzenie ewolucyjne niespokrewnionych ze sobą taksonów i prowadzi do utrwalenia fałszywego obrazu ewolucji zwierząt.
