The internal combustion engine is an engine in which the combustion of fuel and an oxidizer (typically air) occurs in a confined space called a combustion chamber. This exothermic reaction creates gases at high temperature and pressure, which are permitted to expand. The defining feature of an internal combustion engine is that useful work is performed by the expanding hot gases acting directly to cause movement of solid parts of the engine, by acting on pistons, rotors, or even by pressing on and moving the entire engine itself.

Le moteur à combustion interne est une machine où l'énergie thermique dégagée par la combustion est transformée en énergie motrice mécanique directement à l'intérieur du moteur, en opposition au moteur à combustion externe ou l'énergie est transportée par un fluide caloporteur à l'extérieur de celle-ci, comme dans un ensemble chaudière, turbine à vapeur ou moteur Stirling.

Ein Verbrennungsmotor ist eine Verbrennungskraftmaschine, die durch diskontinuierliche innere Verbrennung (daher auch die englische Bezeichnung "internal combustion engine") von Kraftstoff oder Treibstoff mechanische Arbeit verrichtet.Nicht zu den Verbrennungsmotoren im engeren Sinne zählen Motoren mit äußerer Verbrennung, d.h. mit Verbrennung außerhalb des Zylinders, wie beispielsweise Dampfmaschinen und Stirlingmotoren, sowie Strömungsmaschinen, wie beispielsweise Gasturbinen oder Strahltriebwerke, bei denen die innere Verbrennung kontinuierlich abläuft.
