intermezzo

In music, an intermezzo (pl. intermezzi), in the most general sense, is a composition which fits between other musical or dramatic entities, such as acts of a play or movements of a larger musical work. In music history the term has had several different usages, which fit into two general categories: the opera intermezzo and the instrumental intermezzo.

InterMezzo is a distributed file system written for Linux, distributed under the GPL. The kernel component has been included in the standard Linux kernel since kernel version 2.4.15. InterMezzo is designed to work on top of an existing journaling file system such as ext3, JFS, ReiserFS and XFS.An InterMezzo system consists of a server, which holds the master copy of the file system, and one or more clients with a cache of the file system. It works either in a replication mode, in which a client maintains a duplicate of the entire file system, or in an on-demand mode in which the client only requests files that it needs. It does this by capturing all writes to the server's file system journal streaming them to the client systems to be replayed.

Intermezzo (auch: Intermedium, Intermedio, Intermède: lat., ital., franz. "Zwischenspiel") ist der Name der zum Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts in Italien aufgekommenen tänzerisch-musikalischen Zwischenaktsunterhaltungen bei Aufführungen von höfischen Schauspielen und Opern.– Allgemeiner gebraucht man den Ausdruck Intermezzo für einen unerwarteten, komischen Zwischenfall.

Intermezzo – forma muzyczna.W średniowieczu część dramatu liturgicznego np. pasji, muzyczne przejście pomiędzy poszczególnymi scenami.Stanowi wstawkę muzyczno-dramatyczna, o charakterze komicznym, wykonywaną w przerwach między aktami opery zwanej opera seria, w XVII w. we Włoszech. Z tych wstawek powstał, z czasem, nowy gatunek - opera buffa. Większość ówczesnych oper, wystawianych we Włoszech i we Francji, posiadało tak zwany intermèdes, czyli balet z muzyką wokalną. To one dały początek, razem z baletami dworskimi, nowej formie teatralnej zwanej spektaklem baletowymWe współczesnym dramacie jakakolwiek wstawka muzyczna obcego pochodzenia lub komponowana specjalnie dla tego celu.Krótkie przejście łączące części utworu cyklicznego np. symfoniiSamodzielna kompozycja, zwykle miniatura o lekkiej treści, sugerująca, że kompozytor napisał ją dla czystej przyjemności, niejako na marginesie poważniejszej pracy. Definicja ta jest jednak trudna do obrony w przypadku niektórych intermezzo np Brahmsa, które są poważnymi dziełami muzycznymi. Często należy traktować to jako deklarację artysty, a nie fakt.

In musica, per intermezzo s'intende generalmente una composizione posta tra altre entità musicali o drammatiche, come ad esempio gli atti di una commedia o i movimenti di un lungo lavoro strumentale.Nella storia della musica questo termine ha avuto significati differenti. Si distinguono in particolare il genere operistico settecentesco dell'intermezzo, l'intermezzo sinfonico che separa gli atti delle opere e l'intermezzo strumentale.
