Advocacy groups (also pressure groups, lobby groups and some interest groups and special interest groups) use various forms of advocacy to influence public opinion and/or policy; they have played and continue to play an important part in the development of political and social systems. Groups vary considerably in size, influence and motive; some have wide ranging long term social purposes, others are focused and are a response to an immediate issue or concern.

The term interest group refers to virtually any voluntary association that seeks to publicly promote and create advantages for its cause. It applies to a vast array of diverse organizations. This includes corporations, charitable organizations, civil rights groups, neighborhood associations, professional and trade associations.

Eine Interessenvertretung (in Österreich Interessensvertretung), auch Interessengruppe genannt, soll die Interessen einer bestimmten gesellschaftlichen Gruppe definieren und vertreten.

Un groupe de pression ou groupe d'intérêt est un groupe de personnes plus ou moins organisées qui ont pour but de défendre leurs intérêts particuliers, déterminées à promouvoir ou à empêcher des changements politiques auprès d'organismes publics, sans essayer d'être élus. C'est d'ailleurs par ce dernier énoncé qu'il se différencit le plus des partis politiques.

利益団体 （りえきだんたい、利益集団、インタレストグループ） とは特定の集団の利益を図るべく活動する政治団体で、目的を実現するために政治に組織的に影響力を及ぼすが、政党と異なり政権をとろうとすることはない団体である。圧力団体 （あつりょくだんたい） ともいう。
