Insects (from Latin , a calque of Greek  [], "cut into sections") are a class of living creatures within the arthropods that have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body (head, thorax, and abdomen), three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes, and two antennae. They are among the most diverse groups of animals on the planet, including more than a million described species and representing more than half of all known living organisms. The number of extant species is estimated at between six and ten million, and potentially represent over 90% of the differing metazoan life forms on Earth. Insects may be found in nearly all environments, although only a small number of species occur in the oceans, a habitat dominated by another arthropod group, the crustaceans.

Nach verschiedenen Hochrechnungen rechnet man allerdings mit einem Vielfachen, wobei vor allem in den tropischen Regenwäldern noch Millionen unentdeckter Arten vermutet werden. Fossil lassen sich Insekten zum ersten Mal im Devon oder vor rund 400 Millionen Jahren nachweisen.

Są to zwierzęta wszystkich środowisk lądowych, wtórnie przystosowały się też do środowiska wodnego. Były pierwszymi zwierzętami, które posiadły umiejętność aktywnego lotu. Rozmiary ciała owadów wahają się od 0,25 mm do ponad 350 mm. W Polsce do najliczniej reprezentowanych rzędów owadów należą: motyle, chrząszcze, błonkówki i muchówki. Owady mają olbrzymie znaczenie dla ekosystemów, są wśród nich też szkodniki (z ludzkiego punktu widzenia), organizmy pasożytnicze i komensale. Dużą grupę stanowią owady przenoszące choroby pasożytnicze, bakteryjne i wirusowe. Nauka zajmująca się owadami to entomologia.
