An input method editor (IME) is a program or operating system component that allows computer users to enter characters and symbols not found on their keyboard. This, for instance, allows the user of a Western keyboard to input Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Indic characters.It is also called an input method environment.

Une méthode d'entrée (en anglais, input method en général ou input method editor (IME) chez Microsoft) est un programme ou un composant d'un système d'exploitation qui permet aux utilisateurs d'un ordinateur de taper des caractères complexes et des symboles (tels que les caractères chinois, coréen, japonais ou d'origine Indiennes (Sanskrit, Tamoul, Tibétain...), à l'aide d'un clavier occidental classique. Die Eingabemethode ist eine Methode zum Eingeben von Zeichen (engl. character) in einen Computer, auch wenn das Zeichen auf der Tastatur nicht vorhanden ist. Dies kommt vor, wenn es viel mehr Zeichen als Tasten gibt (wie etwa im Chinesischen oder Japanischen) oder wenn das Zeichen aus einer fremden Sprache ist, wie etwa kyrillische Buchstaben oder deutsche Umlaute bei englischem Tastaturlayout.

IMEとは Input Method Editor の略であり、Windowsでは文字入力を補助するソフトウェアのこと。日本語Windowsに主に使われている日本語入力用IMEは、ローマ字からひらがな/カタカナへの変換、かなから漢字への変換などを行う。Windowsに限らずに広く文字入力のためのシステムを表す一般名称はインプットメソッドである。Windows以外のOSで使われるインプットメソッド(Mac OSのことえりなど)についてもIMEと呼ばれることもあるが、IMEは本来Windows用語であり、これは誤用である。
