Acronyms and initialisms are abbreviations formed from the initial components in a phrase or a word. These components may be individual letters (as in CEO) or parts of words (as in Benelux and Ameslan). There is no universal agreement on the precise definition of the various terms (see nomenclature) nor on written usage (see orthographic styling). In English and most other languages, such abbreviations have historically had limited use, but their coinage and use became much more common in the 20th century. As a type of word formation process, acronyms and initialisms are viewed as a subtype of blending.

Ein Akronym (dt. Initialwort) (gr. ἀκρωνύμιον, von ἄκρος/ákros, „die Spitze, der Rand“, und ὄνομα/ónoma, „der Name“) ist ein Sonderfall der Abkürzung. Es gibt zwei konkurrierende Definitionen des Begriffs.

L'acronymie (du grec , ákros, « au bout, extrême » et , ónoma, « nom ») est l’abréviation d’un groupe de mots formée par la ou les premières lettres de ces mots dont le résultat, nommé acronyme, se prononce comme un mot normal — on parle aussi de lexicalisation. Il diffère en ce point de l’abréviation dont les lettres sont épelées (SNCF) et de l’abréviation prononcée en long (etc.).

Akronym (grekiska ακρος, akros, ytterst, och ονυμα, onyma, namn) eller initialförkortning är en förkortning bildad av begynnelsebokstäverna i flera ord eller ordled. Vissa anser att termen "akronym" endast skall användas för initialförkortningar vilka utläses som uttalbara ord istället för att uttalas bokstav för bokstav. Exempelvis är initialförkortningen Ikea definitivt en akronym, medan CD inte är en akronym enligt den snävare definitionen.

Skrótowiec, in. akronim (z gr. ákros = skrajny) – słowo utworzone przez skrócenie wyrażenia składającego się z dwóch lub więcej słów. Istnieje także niewielka grupa skrótowców powstałych ze skrócenia jednego słowa. W ujęciu słowotwórczym, skrótowce to specyficzna klasa derywatów. Derywaty te funkcjonują w polszczyźnie pisanej i mówionej. Skrótowiec często bywa mylony ze skrótem.
