information science

Not to be confused with informatics or information theory. Information science (also information studies) is an interdisciplinary science primarily concerned with the collection, classification, manipulation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information. Information science studies the application and usage of knowledge in organizations, and the interaction between people, organizations and information systems. It is often (mistakenly) considered a branch of computer science. It is actually a broad, interdisciplinary field, incorporating not only aspects of computer science, but also library science, cognitive science, and the social sciences.

Informatiekunde is een jonge tak van de wetenschap die zich bezighoudt met (grote hoeveelheden) data die door de computer verwerkt kunnen worden, om daaruit nuttige data/informatie te organiseren, te presenteren, op te slaan, te manipuleren, te visualiseren en te vinden. Het Engelse equivalent van informatiekunde wordt aangeduid met Information Science of Information Studies.
