The information society is a society where the creation, distribution, diffusion, use, integration and manipulation of information is a significant economic, political, and cultural activity. The aim of the information society is to gain competitive advantage internationally, through using information technology (IT) in a creative and productive way. The knowledge economy is its economic counterpart, whereby wealth is created through the economic exploitation of understanding. People who have the means to partake in this form of society are sometimes called digital citizens. This is one of many dozen labels that have been identified to suggest that we are entering a new phase of society.

Der Begriff Informationsgesellschaft bezeichnet eine auf Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) basierende Gesellschaft. Der Prozess der Durchdringung aller Lebensbereiche mit IKT, durch den sich eine postindustrielle oder postmoderne Informationsgesellschaft bildet, wird als Informatisierung bezeichnet (Nora/Minc 1979). Der Begriff Informationsgesellschaft ist nicht starr definiert und wird oft mit dem Begriff der Wissensgesellschaft zusammen verwendet. Ob wir uns heute in einer Informations- oder Wissengesellschaft oder beiden befinden ist nicht allgemein klar. Die beiden Begriffe werden häufig synonym verwendet.

La société de l'information désigne une société dans laquelle les technologies de l'information jouent un rôle fondamental. Elle est en général placée dans la continuité de la société industrielle. Le concept de société de la connaissance est parfois préféré à celui de société de l'information.
