The term indigenous peoples has no universal, standard or fixed definition, but can be used about any ethnic group who inhabit the geographic region with which they have the earliest historical connection. However, several widely-accepted formulations, which define the term "Indigenous peoples" in stricter terms, have been put forward by prominent and internationally-recognised organizations, such as the United Nations, the International Labour Organization and the World Bank. Indigenous peoples in this article is used in such a narrower sense.

Indigene Völker ist eine relativ junge Lehnübersetzung wahrscheinlich vom spanischen Pueblos indígenas und bezeichnet Gemeinschaften von Ureinwohnern einer Region oder eines Landes. Der Ausdruck „Indigene Völker“ hat in Lateinamerika als Sammelbezeichnung für alle Nachkommen der vorkolumbischen Bevölkerung die auf Kolumbus' Verwechslung mit Indien beruhenden Begriffe Indios/Indianer ersetzt.

Autochton ( autochthon) –  człowiek należący do rdzennej ludności danego obszaru, np. Indianie amerykańscy czy australijscy Aborygeni.Od 1945 narzucona przez władze nazwa przedstawiciela społeczności pogranicza polsko-niemieckiego (wg Andrzeja Saksona), byłego obywatela III Rzeszy, deklarującego polskie pochodzenie. Termin był niezrozumiały dla tych osób, przyjął się i bywa używany do dziś, także w innych językach.

Per popoli indigeni (o popoli aborigeni) si intendono quelle popolazioni le cui origini in un particolare luogo risalgono alla preistoria.La maggior parte di questi popoli, come per esempio i Pigmei, i Boscimani, la civiltà bantu, gli Aborigeni australiani, i nativi americani, è stata vittima del colonialismo degli Imperi di origine Europea e tuttora lotta per mantenere il proprio territorio, le proprie lingue, la propria cultura e la sovranità in genere.
