index (publishing)

An index is a list of words and associated pointers to where those words can be found in a document. In a traditional back-of-the-book index the words (or phrases) are concepts selected by a person and the pointers are page numbers. In a library catalog the words are authors, titles, subject headings, etc., and the pointers are call numbers. Internet search engines, such as Google, are indexes too. The words are words found in HTML (or other documents), and the pointers are URL's.

Ein Register (auch Index oder Stichwortverzeichnis) ist die tabellarische Aufzählung möglichst aller wichtigen Einheiten eines Kollektivs mit Hinweis auf ihre Stellung im Kollektiv. (Beispiele: Namen der Teilnehmer an einem Telefonnetz nebst Rufnummer; Namen der in einem Buch erwähnten Personen nebst Seitenzahl).

Een index of register van een boek of andere publicatie is een lijst met trefwoorden en de bijbehorende paginanummers of andersoortige vindplaatsaanduiding.Boeken kunnen op hun beurt ook in een index zijn opgenomen. Bekend is de index van verboden boeken van de Rooms-katholieke kerk.

Register eller index benämns den del i mer omfattande publikationer (främst böcker) där nyckelord listas i alfabetisk ordning tillsammans med en sidhänvisning för att underlätta sökandet i publikationen.
