An illusion is a distortion of a sensory perception, revealing how the brain normally organizes and interprets sensory stimulation. While illusions distort reality, they are generally shared by most people. Illusions may occur with more of the human senses than vision, but visual illusions, optical illusions, are the most well known and understood. The emphasis on visual illusions occurs because vision often dominates the other senses. For example, individuals watching a ventriloquist will perceive the voice is coming from the dummy since they are able to see the dummy mouth the words. Some illusions are based on general assumptions the brain makes during perception. These assumptions are made using organizational principles, like Gestalt, an individual's ability of depth perception and motion perception, and perceptual constancy. Other illusions occur because of biological sensory structures within the human body or conditions outside of the body within one’s physical environment.

Illusion und das ältere, heute ungebräuchliche und praktisch unbekannte Zeitwort „illudieren“ ist eine Ableitung vom lat. Verb illudere. Dieses wiederum ist eine Zusammensetzung des Verbs ludere für "spielen" mit der lokalen Präposition in. Eine hierauf bezogene Bedeutung von illudere reicht nach Schullexikonangaben dabei von spielend hinwerfen und ins Spiel werfen über sein Spiel treiben, veralbern und verspotten bis zu verhöhnen, täuschen und betrügen. In anderer Auffassung von "in"-ludere als "innerlich"spielen gerät Illusion in die Nähe des ähnlich gebildeten deutschen Ausdrucks "Gedanken"-Spiel. Von hier leiten sich vielfältige Bedeutungen von Illusion ab, die sämtlich mit Selbsttäuschungen aller Art bis hin zum Selbstbetrug zu tun haben. Dann kann ein täuschender oder (in des Wortes ursprünglicher, nämlich wieder lateinischer Bedeutung) Eindruck ebenso gemeint sein wie genauso falsche und damit wie immer unrealistische Vorstellungen, die man "sich machen" oder "bilden" kann: indem man "sich etwas einbildet" oder auch "vormacht".

Un'illusione è una distorsione di una percezione sensoriale, causata dal modo in cui il cervello normalmente organizza ed interpreta le stesse. Le illusioni possono coinvolgere i vari sensi, ma quelle visive sono le più famose e conosciute, dal momento che la vista spesso prevarica sugli altri sensi.Si differenzia dalla allucinazione, che è una caratteristica della schizofrenia, perché nella allucinazione si percepisce qualcosa che non è presente nella realtà in quel momento. L’allucinazione viene anche definita come “percezione senza oggetto”. (Esempio: penso che qualcuno mi abbia impiantato un PC nel cervello, che mi parla e mi obbliga a fare certe cose)
