An identifier is a name that identifies (that is, labels the identity of) either a unique object or a unique class of objects, where the "object" or class may be an idea, physical [countable] object (or class thereof), or physical [noncountable] substance (or class thereof). The abbreviation ID often refers to identity, identification (the process of identifying), or an identifier (that is, an instance of identification). An identifier may be a word, number, letter, symbol, or any combination of those.

Ein Identifikator (auch Kennung oder kurz ID) ist ein künstlich zugewiesenes Merkmal zur eindeutigen Identifizierung eines Objektes. Beispielsweise verweist eine Hausnummer als Identifikator innerhalb einer Straße auf ein bestimmtes Haus. In Datenbanken werden Identifikatoren zur Kennzeichnung eines Datensatzes als Datenbank-ID oder Stammnummer bezeichnet. Als Identifikatoren werden häufig Nummern oder Codes aus alphanumerischen Zeichen verwendet, wobei unter Anderem von Nummerncode (Zahlen- oder Zifferncode und auch alphanumerischer Code) oder Buchstabencode gesprochen wird. Auch natürlichsprachliche Identifikatoren (beispielsweise Bezeichner in einem Computerprogramm oder Deskriptoren in einem kontrolliertem Vokabular) und andere Merkmale, beispielsweise Farbcodierung (wie die Farben rot und grün für Backbord und Steuerbord) sind möglich.
