Ice Plant
The common name Ice Plant refers to Carpobrotus edulis, a creeping, mat-forming
succulent species, and member of the Stone Plant family
Aizoaceae, one of about 30 species in the genus Carpobrotus. It is also known as the Highway Ice Plant, Pigface or Hottentot Fig and in
South Africa as the Sour Fig, on account of its edible fruit. It was previously classified in
genus Mesembryanthemum and is sometimes referred to by this name.

Zuid-Afrika en is nu in veel
Europese landen te vinden, vooral aan de kust. Verschillende verwante soorten komen tegenwoordig in Europese kustgebieden voor.Het is een kruipende plant die zich flink kan uitspreiden. Zo worden kussens gevormd van 25 tot 30 cm hoog. Ze komen voor op rotsen, kliffen en zandgrond. Het blad is heldergroen, vlezig en worstvormig. De bladeren kunnen tot 10 cm lang worden. Ze vertonen op de dwarsdoorsnede een driekantige vorm.
