A hype man is a hip-hop or funk performer responsible for backup rapping and singing (giving the lead vocalist time to catch his or her breath), as well as providing comic relief and increasing audience excitement and participation with call-and-response chants. Flavor Flav of Public Enemy is considered one of the best hypemen.
