Hymnal or hymnary or hymnbook is a collection of hymns, i.e. religious songs, usually in the form of a book. The earliest hand-written hymnals are known since Middle Ages in the context of European Christianity. The Reformation in the 16th century together with the newly discovered printing quickly made hymnals to a standard feature of Christian worship in all major denominations of Western and Central Europe.

Ein Hymnus (vom griechisch: ὕμνος hymnos „Tongefüge“) bzw. eine Hymne (deutsche Rückbildung mit Genuswechsel aus dem Plural: Hymnen) ist ein feierlicher Preis- und Lobgesang. Die Hymne ist Ausdruck hoher Begeisterung, dementsprechend kennt sie keine formalen Regelmäßigkeiten. Sie ist in freien Rhythmen verfasst und hat keinen Reim oder festen Strophenbau. Die Hymne ist mit der Ode verwandt.

Chez les Anciens, un hymne (n.m) est un chant, poème à la gloire des dieux ou des héros, souvent associé à un rituel religieux.

Hymn, av latinets hymnus, av grekiskans hymnos med betydelsen 'sång till gudars eller hjältars ära' – även 'lovsång till Gud', är en högtidlig sång, t.ex. nationalhymn, ofta av religiös karaktär.

Hymn (z greckiego hymnos tzn. pieśń pochwalna) - uroczysta i podniosła pieśń pochwalna o apostroficznym charakterze wypowiedzi, komponowana na cześć bóstwa, szczególnej osoby, wydarzenia, ojczyzny (kraju), a także idei. W kręgu kultury europejskiej hymny znane były w basenie Morza Śródziemnego już w starożytności. Na stałe weszły do kanonów kulturowych wraz z rozwojem chrześcijaństwa, który uczynił swoim ten rodzaj literacki wzorując się na hebrajskim Starym Testamencie i judeo-chrześcijanskim Nowym Testamencie. W literaturze średniowiecznej miał charakter niemal wyłącznie religijny. Współcześnie utożsamiany z pieśnią patriotyczną lub utworem reprezentującym konkretne środowisko społeczne.
