Human rights refers to "the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled, often held to include the right to life and liberty, freedom of thought and expression, and equality before the law." The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."

Prawa człowieka to pojęcie reprezentujące koncepcję, według której każdemu człowiekowi przysługują pewne prawa, wynikające z godności człowieka, które są niezbywalne (nie można się ich zrzec) i nienaruszalne (istnieją niezależnie od władzy i nie mogą być przez nią regulowane). Państwu przypisuje się rolę instytucji, której zadaniem jest ochrona owych praw. Poszanowanie praw człowieka i godności ludzkiej bywa uznawane za podstawę sprawiedliwości i pokoju na świecie.

I diritti umani (o diritti dell'uomo) sono una branca del diritto. Tra i diritti fondamentali dell'essere umano si possono ricordare il diritto alla libertà individuale, il diritto alla vita, il diritto all'autodeterminazione, il diritto a un giusto processo, il diritto ad un'esistenza dignitosa, il diritto alla libertà religiosa con il conseguente diritto a cambiare la propria religione, oltre che, di recente tipizzazione normativa, il diritto alla protezione dei propri dati personali (privacy).
