Bij de mens wordt de huid beschreven als het grootste orgaan, omdat de gehele huid meer weegt dan elk van de andere interne organen. Bovendien bevat de huid, net als interne organen, verschillend gespecialiseerde cellen die samen een functie vervullen. Het is bovendien het enige orgaan dat zonder verdere ingrepen of hulpmiddelen van buitenaf bekeken kan worden. Waarnemen van de huid levert soms belangrijke informatie op over het al of niet goed functioneren van het lichaam als geheel.
