A hospital is an institution for health care, often but not always providing for longer-term patient stays. Today, hospitals are usually funded by the state, health organizations (for profit or non-profit), health insurances or charities, including direct charitable donations. In history, however, they were often founded and funded by religious orders or charitable individuals and leaders. Hospitals are nowadays staffed by professional physicians, surgeons and nurses, whereas in history, this work was usually done by the founding religious orders or by volunteers.

Un hôpital est un lieu destiné à prendre en charge des pathologies et des traumatismes trop complexes pour pouvoir être traités à domicile ou dans le cabinet d'un médecin. En France, les gros hôpitaux sont appelés centre hospitalier.

Spital) ist eine in weiten Teilen Deutschlands veraltete Bezeichnung für Pflegeheime und Altersheime. Es leitet sich vom lateinischen hospes (Gastfreund/Fremdling) ab. Ursprünglich bezeichnete es die meist christlich geführten Pilgerherbergen und Armenhäuser. In Österreich, der Schweiz und einigen Gegenden Deutschlands wird das Wort noch heute als Synonym für Krankenhaus verwendet.

Ein Krankenhaus (als organisatorischer Teilbereich auch Klinik/Klinikum und (veraltet) Hospital, in Österreich und der Schweiz auch oft Spital) ist eine Einrichtung, in der durch ärztliche und pflegerische Hilfeleistung die Krankheiten, Leiden oder körperlichen Schäden festgestellt und geheilt oder gelindert werden. Auch die Geburtshilfe und die Sterbebegleitung gehören zu den Aufgaben eines Krankenhauses.

Szpital to jedna z najważniejszych jednostek organizacyjnych w systemie opieki zdrowotnej. W szpitalu udziela się świadczeń zdrowotnych w warunkach zamkniętych.
