Horror fiction also Horror fantasy is a genre of literature, which is intended to, or has the capacity to frighten its readers, inducing feelings of horror and terror. It creates an eerie atmosphere. Horror can be either supernatural or non-supernatural. The genre has ancient origins which were reformulated in the eighteenth century as Gothic horror, with publication of the Castle of Otranto (1764) by Horace Walpole.

Horror (łac. groza, strach), fantastyka grozy – odmiana fantastyki polegająca na budowaniu świata przedstawionego na wzór rzeczywistości i praw nią rządzących po to, aby wprowadzić w jego obręb zjawiska kwestionujące te prawa i nie dające się wytłumaczyć bez odwoływania się do zjawisk nadprzyrodzonych. Zadaniem horroru jest często wywołanie lęku i niepokoju u odbiorcy utworu. Pojawiające się w świecie utworu zjawiska fantastyczne podważają ustalone na początku i akceptowane przez bohaterów prawa świata. Różnica między horrorem a thrillerem polega na tym, że w thrillerze zagrożenie ma charakter realny (np. przestępca, epidemia).
