Horror films are a film genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's most primal fears. They often feature scenes that startle the viewer through the means of macabre and the supernatural, thus they may overlap with the fantasy and supernatural genre. Horrors frequently overlap with the thriller genre.

Der Horrorfilm ist ein Filmgenre, das beim Zuschauer Gefühle der Angst, des Schreckens und Verstörung auszulösen versucht. Oftmals, jedoch nicht zwangsläufig, treten dabei übernatürliche Akteure oder Phänomene auf, von denen eine zumeist lebensbedrohliche und traumatische Wirkung auf die Protagonisten ausgeht. Die deutsche Bezeichnung Gruselfilm wird tendenziell eher für ältere Horrorfilme verwendet.

Cunningham), Les griffes de la nuit (de Wes Craven), Scream (de Wes Craven), ou la célèbre série des Zombie (de George Andrew Romero).

Skräckfilm är en filmgenre med målsättningen att väcka känslor av rädsla, obehag, skräck, spänning och äckel hos tittaren. Handlingen involverar ofta inblandning av en ond kraft, händelse, eller person, ofta av övernaturligt ursprung, i den jordliga världen.

Horror (łac. groza, strach), fantastyka grozy – odmiana fantastyki polegająca na budowaniu świata przedstawionego na wzór rzeczywistości i praw nią rządzących po to, aby wprowadzić w jego obręb zjawiska kwestionujące te prawa i nie dające się wytłumaczyć bez odwoływania się do zjawisk nadprzyrodzonych. Zadaniem horroru jest często wywołanie lęku i niepokoju u odbiorcy utworu. Pojawiające się w świecie utworu zjawiska fantastyczne podważają ustalone na początku i akceptowane przez bohaterów prawa świata. Różnica między horrorem a thrillerem polega na tym, że w thrillerze zagrożenie ma charakter realny (np. przestępca, epidemia).
