A hormone (from Greek όρμή - "to set in motion") is a chemical messenger that carries a signal from one cell (or group of cells) to another. All multicellular organisms produce hormones (including plants - see phytohormone). The function of hormones is to carry information to the target cells; the action of hormones is determined by the pattern of secretion and response of the receiving tissue - the signal transduction response.The best-known animal hormones are those produced by endocrine glands of vertebrate animals, but hormones are produced by nearly every organ system and tissue type in a multicellular organism.

Ein Hormon (griechisch ὁρμάω 'hormáō' antreiben) ist ein biochemischer Botenstoff. Hormone übermitteln innerhalb eines Lebewesens Informationen von einem Organ zum anderen oder von einem Gewebe zum anderen. Im Gegensatz zur hohen Geschwindigkeit bei der durch Nerven vermittelten Information können von der Hormonausschüttung bis zu ihrer Wirkung einige Sekunden (z.B. Adrenalin) bis Stunden vergehen. Hormone in tierischen Lebewesen werden durch den Blutkreislauf zu ihren Zielorganen transportiert. Eine Ausnahme bilden Gewebshormone, die im selben Organ gebildet werden und wirken.

Hormon (od hormao - rzucam się naprzód, pędzę) – u kręgowców związek chemiczny, który jest wydzielany przez gruczoły lub tkanki układu hormonalnego. Funkcją hormonu jest regulacja czynności i modyfikacja cech strukturalnych tkanek leżących w pobliżu miejsca jego wydzielania lub oddalonych, do których dociera poprzez krew. Istnieją także takie hormony, które wywierają wpływ na funkcjonowanie wszystkich tkanek organizmu.
