The state of being a homonym is called homonymy. Examples of homonyms are stalk (which can mean either part of a plant or to follow someone around) and the trio of words to, too and two (actually, to, to, too, too and two, being "for the purpose of" as in "to make it easier", the opposite of "from", also, excessively, and "2", respectively). Some sources state that homonym meanings must be unrelated in origin (rather than just different). Thus right (correct) and right (opposed to left) would be polysemous (see below) and not be homonyms.

Ein Homonym ist ein Wort, das für verschiedene Begriffe oder verschiedene Wesenheiten steht. Im ersten Fall spricht man auch von einer Äquivokation. Ein Beispiel für Homonymität im Sinne einer Äquivokation ist das Morphem „,Tau“, das ein Seil, einen morgendlichen Niederschlag oder den 19. Buchstaben des griechischen Alphabets und vieles mehr bedeuten kann.

Homonim to wyraz mający jednakowe brzmienie z innym wyrazem, lecz odmienne znaczenie (np. wyraz zamek może mieć kilka znaczeń: zamek do drzwi lub zamek królewski albo zamek błyskawiczny. Słowo kozioł też ma dwa znaczenia ponieważ może być to zwierzę lub przyrząd gimnastyczny). W taksonomii homonimem są identyczne nazwy naukowe (np. Festuca incrassata L. i Festuca incrassata Salzm. ex Lois.) odnoszące się do innych taksonów. Zgodnie z przyjętymi zasadami nomenklatorycznymi później utworzone nazwy homonimiczne są nieuprawnione (stanowią synonimy dla nazw poprawnych, mających oryginalne brzmienie).
