Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California, situated west-northwest of Downtown Los Angeles. Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie studios and movie stars, the word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonym for the Cinema of the United States. Today much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as Burbank and the Los Angeles Westside but significant auxiliary industries, such as editing, effects, props, post-production and lighting companies, remain in Hollywood.

Hollywood [] (engl.: Stechpalmenwald) ist ein Stadtteil von Los Angeles im US-Bundesstaat Kalifornien mit 167.664 Einwohnern (Volkszählung 2000). Weltbekannt ist Hollywood als Zentrum der US-amerikanischen Filmindustrie, weshalb ihr Name oft auch als Synonym für die gesamte Branche steht. Deren Kritiker nennen Hollywood abwertend auch „Tinseltown“ (engl.: „Talmi-Stadt“ oder „Tand-Stadt“). In den Hollywood Hills über der Stadt befindet sich das bekannte Hollywood Sign, große Buchstaben, die 1923 als „Hollywoodland“ errichtet wurden, um für den Verkauf von Grundstücken zu werben. Als die Buchstaben mehr und mehr verfielen, wurde 1978 durch die Handelskammer von Hollywood mit Unterstützung einiger Prominenter zum 91. Geburtstag der Stadt ein neuer Schriftzug aufgestellt. Der Aufstieg Hollywoods, das im Jahr 1887 von der Familie Wilcox gegründet wurde, begann 1911, als David Horsleys Nestor Company hier das erste Filmstudio eröffnete. Noch im gleichen Jahr übersiedelten 15 weitere, „Independents“ genannte, Firmen von New York, dem damaligen Zentrum der Filmindustrie, nach Hollywood. Es gab mehrere Gründe für diesen Umzug. Neben ökonomischen waren es das geeignetere Klima und die längeren Tage (zu dieser Zeit hatte man noch kein adäquates Kunstlicht, man drehte also entweder im Freien oder in einem Studio mit Glasdach o. Ä.). Mitentscheidend war zweifelsohne auch die große Entfernung zu New York, von wo aus die mächtige Motion Picture Patents Company (MPPC) alle ihre nicht angeschlossenen Firmen mit hohen Strafen und Lizenzgebühren bedrohte.

Hollywood è un distretto della città di Los Angeles, in California, situato a nord-ovest del centro cittadino. La popolazione è stimata sulle 300.000 unità (i distretti di Los angeles non hanno confini ufficiali).Data la sua fama come centro storico del mondo del cinema e del divismo, anche se non riveste più l'importanza degli anni tra il 1920 e il 1940, il termine Hollywood è spesso utilizzato metaforicamente per intendere l'industria cinematografica americana.Ai visitatori si presenta come una zona piuttosto squallida, costruita senza una precisa connotazione urbana, formata da bassi edifici e da larghe strade e viali posti ai margini delle due celebri vie, Sunset Boulevard e Wiltshire Boulevard; all'interno raccoglie i grandi teatri di posa (21 nel periodo di massima prosperità) e le abitazioni degli attori, dei registi e dei produttori, situate in genere sulle pendici della vicina collina di Beverly Hills. Sia in questo quartiere della città losangelina che nei non lontani centri di Burbank, Glendale, Culver City e Santa Monica sorgono inoltre stabilimenti di sviluppo e stampa dei film, di sincronizzazione e così via.
