hogshead

A hogshead is a large cask of liquid (less often, of a food commodity). More specifically, it refers to a specified volume, measured in Imperial units, primarily applied to alcoholic beverages such as wine, ale, or cider. A tobacco hogshead was used in (American) colonial times to transport and store tobacco. It was a very large wooden barrel. A standardized hogshead measured 48 inches long and 30 inches in diameter at the head. Fully packed with tobacco, it weighed about 1000 pounds. The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) notes that the hogshead was first standardized by an act of Parliament in 1423, though the standards continued to vary by locality and content. For example, the OED cites an 1897 edition of Whitaker's Almanack, which specified the number of gallons of wine in a hogshead varying by type of wine: claret 46 gallons,  port 57, sherry 54; and Madeira 46. The American Heritage Dictionary claims that a hogshead can consist of anything from 62.5 to 140 (presumably U.S.) gallons.

Oxhoft ist ein altes Flüssigkeitsmaß, besonders für Wein und Bier. Je nach Region versteht man unter einem Oxhoft ein Volumen von 148 bis zu 235 Liter.1 Oxhoft = 1½ Ohm = 180 QuartDer Name leitet sich vom holländischen Oxhoofd (Ochsenhaupt oder Ochsenkopf) ab und rührt daher, dass man früher Schläuche aus Rindsleder zum Aufbewahren von Wein verwendete. Es entspricht dem englischen Hogshead und dem französischen Barrique. Heute werden Oxhoft-Fässer nur noch sehr selten zur Weinherstellung herangezogen, da sich international das französische Barrique durchgesetzt hat. Einzig im österreichischen Burgenland kommen Oxhoft-Fässer bei der Weinherstellung noch in nennenswertem Maße vor.

Okseft - dawna miara objętości cieczy, często stosowana w winiarstwie i piwowarstwie; inaczej "wielka beczka". Okseft pruski równy był 206 litrom, miara ta w innych krajach, zależnie od czasu równa bywała od około 200 do ponad 600 litrów.Zależnie od rodzaju mierzonej cieczy (piwo, wino), a nawet od gatunku wina, liczyła najczęściej od około 210 do 250 litrów; np. w krajach anglosaskich, wg norm z roku 1897, okseft wina madera to 46 galonów (209,1 litrów), ale sherry - 54 galony (245,5 litrów).Również tytoń pakowany był w drewniane beczki. Standardowy okseft tytoniu to beczka wysokości 48 cali i średnicy przy pokrywie 30 cali (tzn. 1,22 m wysokości, Ø 0,76 m); w takiej beczce mieściło się 1000  funtów tytoniu.

Een okshoofd (ouderwets oxhoofd) is een inhoudsmaat in de vorm van een groot vat, dat vroeger voor wijn gebruikt werd. De maat wordt echter ook gebruikt voor azijn, tabak en suiker.Een okshoofd bevatte zes ankers. De naam Okshoofd wordt nog steeds voor bedrijven geassocieerd met drank, of drankenhandel, gebruikt.De Engelse naam voor een okshoofd is hogshead. In Engeland werd de inhoudsmaat voor het eerst gestandaardiseerd in 1423, door een act of Parliament. Een hogshead wijn bevatte 2 barrels, en 63 gallon. Een hogshead bier bevatte 3 barrels, en 48 gallons. Voor cider, olie, etc. waren er nog andere verhoudingen.
