The history of China is told in traditional historical records that refer as far back as the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors about 5,000 years ago, supplemented by archaeological records dating to the 16th century BC. China is one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations. Turtle shells with markings reminiscent of ancient Chinese writing from the Shang Dynasty have been carbon dated to around 1500 BC. Chinese civilization originated with city-states in the Yellow River valley.The yellow river was named that because of the loess that would build up on the bank and down in the earth then it would sink creating a yellowish tint to the water. 221 BC is the commonly accepted year when China became unified under a large kingdom or empire. Successive dynasties in Chinese history developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the Emperor of China to control the large territory.

La civilisation chinoise est la civilisation actuelle dont les origines directes sont les plus anciennes. Depuis 3 500 ans, les dynasties successives ont développé un système bureaucratique élaboré, qui donne aux paysans chinois un avantage important par rapport aux nomades et aux montagnards voisins. La civilisation chinoise a encore été renforcée par le développement d'une idéologie nationale basée sur le confucianisme et par une langue écrite commune qui permet de lier les différentes langues locales, toutes très différentes à l'oral. Lorsque la Chine fut conquise par les tribus nomades du Nord, comme les Mongols au , les envahisseurs adoptèrent tôt ou tard les coutumes de la civilisation chinoise et nommèrent des Chinois dans leur administration.

Als Träger dieser Kultur und dominierende Volksgruppe haben sich in der Geschichte Chinas die Han-Chinesen etabliert.Schriftliche Aufzeichnungen über die chinesische Kultur reichen über 3.500 Jahre zurück. Im Mythos geht sie ursprünglich auf die drei Urkaiser zurück: Fuxi, Shennong und schließlich der Gelbe Kaiser Huang Di als eigentlicher Kulturschöpfer – ihnen voran gingen 16 irdische und eine Reihe himmlischer Kaiser. Historische Belege für die Existenz dieser Persönlichkeiten gibt es allerdings keine, sie sollen laut Überlieferung vor 5.000 bis 6.000 Jahren gelebt haben.

Chiny są jednym z państw o najdłuższej tradycji politycznej, a obok Egiptu, Mezopotamii i Indii także jednym z najstarszych ośrodków cywilizacyjnych świata. Tradycja historyczna Chin sięga ok. 1700 r. p.n.e., a na jej orbicie pozostają również sąsiednie kraje, tj. Japonia, Korea Południowa i Północna, Mongolia, Wietnam, Tajwan oraz Tybet, który został przyłączony do Chin na początku lat 50 XX wieku.

De geschiedenis van China geeft een overzicht van de historische ontwikkeling van China. China bezit één van de oudste beschavingen ter wereld. De cultuur loopt ononderbroken van prehistorie tot heden. Zoals de Chinezen zelf zeggen: '5000 jaar geschiedenis en 7000 jaar cultuur' (wuqian nian de lishi, qiqian nian de wenhua, 五千年的歷史，七千年的文化).
