historian

A historian is an individual who studies history and who writes on history. The person may be an authority (or expert) over history, but this is not a requirement. Most generally, historians are the writers, compilers and narrators of history. Historians are concerned with the continuous, systematic narrative and research of past events as relating to the human race; as well as the study of all events in time. If the individual is concerned with events preceding written history, the individual is a historian of prehistory. Although "historian" can be used to describe amateur and professional historians alike, it is reserved more recently for those who have acquired graduate degrees in the discipline. Some historians, though, are recognized by equivalent training and experience in the field. Historian became a professional occupation in the late nineteenth century at roughly the same time that physicians also set standards for who could enter the field. The professional association of historians in the United States is the American Historical Association, founded in 1884.

Ein Historiker ist ein Wissenschaftler, der sich mit der Erforschung und Darstellung der Geschichte beschäftigt. Auch die antiken und mittelalterlichen Geschichtsschreiber werden als Historiker bezeichnet, obgleich sie nicht als Wissenschaftler im heutigen Sinne gelten - zur besseren Abgrenzung wird hier auch oft lediglich von „Geschichtsschreibern“ oder „Historiographen“ gesprochen, was aber nicht zwingend ist. Die Bezeichnung „Historiker“ leitet sich vom altgriechischen Begriff historia (Erkundung, Erforschung) ab.

Een historicus of geschiedkundige is iemand die historisch onderzoek verricht en vaak aan de hand hiervan een artikel of boek schrijft. Soms worden vraagstukken uit de geschiedenis onderzocht die grote invloed hebben op de tijd waarin deze leeft. Er zijn historici die bewust subjectieve beschrijvingen geven van historische verschijnselen, vaak omdat er te weinig van een bepaalde periode bekend is. Een goed voorbeeld hierbij is de Herfsttij der Middeleeuwen van Johan Huizinga. Andere historici zijn meer theoretisch ingesteld en maken grondige analyses van historische gebeurtenissen waarbij ze proberen de grote lijnen van de geschiedenis te ontrafelen. Een goed voorbeeld hiervan is het boekwerk De mechanisering van het wereldbeeld van Eduard Jan Dijksterhuis.
