HIStory - Past, Present and Future, Book I is a double-disc album (one half greatest hits, one half studio album) by American musician Michael Jackson released in June of 1995 by the Epic Records division of Sony BMG.The first disc, (HIStory Begins) contains fifteen hit singles from the past fifteen plus years of his career to this point (which was re-released in late 2001 as an only-compilation project, entitled Greatest Hits - HIStory Volume I). The tracklist included fourteen U.S. Top 10 singles (nine of which were number-one hits) plus the worldwide top 5 hit "Heal the World". The second disc, (HIStory Continues) contains fifteen previously unreleased recordings, five of which were released as singles.

L’histoire est à la fois l’étude des faits, des événements du passé et, par synecdoque, l’ensemble de ces faits, de ces événements. Le nom a pour origine les Enquêtes (, Historíai en grec) d’Hérodote, mais c’est Thucydide qui lui applique le premier des méthodes critiques, notamment le croisement de sources différentes et qui s'efforce de trouver les causes rationnelles et non plus divines des faits historiques. Ibn Khaldoun suit la même voie avant que Tamerlan ne le transforme en à sa gloire. Montesquieu le fera également en se dégageant de l'influence de Bossuet qui dans son Histoire universelle mêlait chroniques historiques et écrits religieux fondamentaux.

Histoire bezeichnet in der Literaturwissenschaft nach den französischen Literaturwissenschaftlern Tzvetan Todorov und Gerard Genette den Inhalt, das „Was“ der Erzählung, das im Gegensatz zum discours, dem „Wie“ der Erzählung, steht. Der Begriff geht auf Émile Benveniste zurück, der ihn in seinen "Problèmes de linguistique générales" entwickelt hat.
