Hip hop is a subculture, which is said to have begun with the work of DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, and Afrika Bambaattaa.The four main aspects, or "elements", of hip hop culture are MCing (rapping), DJing, urban inspired art/tagging (graffiti), and b-boying (or breakdancing). The most known "extended" elements are beatboxing, hip hop fashion, hip hop slang.

Hip hop music is a style of popular music composed of a rhythmic, rhyming vocal style called rapping (also known as emceeing) over backing beats and scratching performed on a turntable by a DJ. When combined with breakdancing and graffiti art, these are the four components of hip hop, a cultural movement which began in New York City in the 1970s, predominantly among African Americans and Latinos. The term rap music is sometimes used synonymously with hip hop music, though it is also used to refer specifically to the practice of rapping.

Le hip-hop est un mouvement culturel et artistique apparu aux États-Unis d’Amérique dans le secteur new-yorkais au début des années 1970 qui mêle des aspects festifs et revendicatifs. Originaire des ghettos noirs de New York, il se répandra rapidement à l'ensemble du pays puis au monde entier au point de devenir une culture urbaine importante. La culture hip-hop connaît quatre expressions principales : le DJing, le MCing, le b-boying ou break dancing et le graffiti né quelques temps avant l'arrivée du hip hop et qui y fut intégré à la naissance du mouvement, auxquelles on adjoint également le human beatboxing, le street-language, le street-fashion, le street-knowledge et le street-entrepreneurialism. C'est néanmoins par son expression musicale qu'il est le plus connu et de fait souvent réduit.

Hip-Hop-Musik [] (Existenz von verschiedenen Schreibweisen) hat ihre Wurzeln in der schwarzen Funk- und Soul-Musik. Der Rap (Sprechgesang), der aus der jamaikanischen Tradition des Toasting entstand, das Samplen und das Scratchen sind weitere Merkmale dieser aus den schwarzen Ghettos der USA stammenden Musik. Der bedeutungsfreie Begriff Hip-Hop geht (je nach Quelle) entweder auf Lovebug Starski oder DJ Hollywood zurück, beides Pioniere der Form.

Hip-Hop [] ist eine kulturelle Bewegung, die ihre Ursprünge in den afroamerikanischen Ghettos New York Citys der 1970er-Jahre hat und sich mittlerweile zu einer weltweiten Subkultur der urbanen Jugend (Jugendkultur) entwickelt hat. Aufgrund ihrer Ursprünge versteht sich Hip-Hop als Street Culture, als Kultur, die zum erheblichem Maße auf der Straße gelebt wird. Die ursprünglichen, integralen Bestandteile (die sogenannten vier Elemente) der Hip-Hop-Kultur sind Rap (MCing), DJing, Breakdance und Graffiti.

KRS-One (* 20. August 1965 in Park Slope, Brooklyn als Lawrence "Kris" Parker) ist ein US-amerikanischer Hip-Hop-MC. Er benutzt auch die Pseudonyme Kris Parker, The Blastmaster und The Teacher. KRS-One ist einer der Pioniere des Hip Hop und fällt insbesondere dadurch auf, dass er soziale und politische Vorstellungen über die Szene pointiert formuliert. Innerhalb der Szene genießt er großen Respekt.

Hip-hop zaczął powoli przenikać do świata kultury masowej na początku lat 80., by w następnej dekadzie rozprzestrzenić się na każdy zakątek globu. Za początek ruchu hiphopowego uważa się zwykle wczesne dokonania DJ Kool Herca (ok. 1969-1971), a DJ Hollywood jest uznawany za pierwszego, który określił kulturę mianem "hip-hopu".

L'Hip Hop è un movimento culturale o sub-cultura nato in prevalenza nelle comunità afroamericane e latine del Bronx, quartiere di New York, alla fine degli anni 1970. Il movimento ha probabilmente mosso i primi passi con il lavoro di DJ Kool Herc che, competendo con DJ Afrika Bambaataa, si dice abbia inventato il termine "hip hop" per descrivere la propria cultura. Cuore del movimento è stato il fenomeno dei Block Party: feste di strada, in cui i giovani afroamericani e portoricani interagivano suonando, ballando e cantando. Parallelamente il fenomeno del graffiti writing contribuì a creare un'identità comune in questi giovani che vedevano la città sia come spazio di vita sia come spazio di espressione. Negli anni 1980, gli aspetti di questa cultura hanno subito una forte esposizione mediatica varcando i confini americani ed espandendosi in tutto il mondo. Il riflesso di questa cultura "urbana" ha generato oggi un imponente fenomeno commerciale e sociale, rivoluzionando il mondo della musica, della danza, dell'abbigliamento e del design.
