The hinterland is the land or district behind a coast or the shoreline of a river. Specifically, by the doctrine of the hinterland, the word is applied to the inland region lying behind a port, claimed by the state that owns the coast. The area from which products are delivered to a port for shipping elsewhere is that port's hinterland. The term is also used to refer to the area around a city or town.

Hinterland ist ein Begriff aus der Humangeographie in verschiedenen Kontexten.

Un arrière-pays est une zone continentale située en arrière d'une côte ou d'un fleuve, par opposition au littoral. En géographie, il désigne plus précisément la zone d'influence et d'attraction économique d'un port. Le mot hinterland, emprunté de l'allemand (hinter « derrière » et de Land « terre, pays ») et utilisé en anglais, apparaît en français en 1894 comme un emprunt de mauvais aloi.

Con la parola tedesca hinterland (corrispontente all'italiano retroterra) si intende la cintura urbana di una città, un complesso di centri abitati che costituiscono i comuni facenti parte delle aree metropolitane delle grandi città. Detti comuni sono sempre confinanti con il capoluogo ma alcune volte hanno il territorio di altri comuni che si inseriscono fra il proprio territorio e quello del capoluogo. Tutti questi comuni hanno, di solito, un sistema di trasporti integrati che consentono il fenomeno del pendolarismo alle molte persone che abitano nell'hinterland e vanno a lavorare nel capoluogo. Fra le maggiori aree metropolitane italiane si possono annoverare quelle di Roma, Milano, Napoli, Torino, Bari, Genova, Palermo, Catania ed altre ancora.

Hinterland of achterland kan in de geologie twee betekenissen hebben:

• achterland (sediment), in de sedimentologie het brongebied van sediment;
• hinterland (gebergte), in de tektoniek het gebied achter een gebergte, aan de kant van de voormalige overrijdende plaat.
