high fantasy

High fantasy is a subgenre of fantasy fiction that is set in invented or parallel worlds. Built upon the platform of a diverse body of works in the already very popular fantasy genre, high fantasy came to fruition through the work of authors such as C. S. Lewis and, foremost, J. R. R. Tolkien, whose major fantasy works were published in the 1950s. While it is far from being the oldest fantasy subgenre, high fantasy, along with sword and sorcery, has become one of the two genres most commonly associated with the general term fantasy.

La High fantasy est un sous-genre de la fantasy très épique aux thèmes sérieux, narrant la quête d'un(e) jeune héros/héroïne ou d'un groupe de héros luttant contre un redoutable ennemi pouvant revêtir la forme d'un méchant sorcier ou d'un Seigneur du Mal, jouant le rôle de la force antagoniste. Les caractéristiques que l'on retrouve le plus souvent sont : un monde secondaire (différent du nôtre) très développé, avec sa propre histoire et sa propre géographie, la présence importante de la Magie, notamment des créatures magiques, un cadre moyen-âgeux, souvent un découpage en de nombreux tomes, une histoire prenant la forme d'une quête, ayant souvent des prophéties pour moteur.
