A heterotroph (; heteros = "another", "different" and trophe = "nutrition") is an organism that cannot fix carbon and uses organic carbon for growth. This contrasts with autotrophs, such as plants and algae, which can use energy from sunlight (photoautotrophs) or inorganic compounds (lithoautotrophs) to produce organic compounds such as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins from inorganic carbon dioxide. These reduced carbon compounds can be used as an energy source by the autotroph and provide the energy in food consumed by heterotrophs.

Heterotrophie (griechisch „sich von anderen ernährend“; von ἕτερος (heteros) = „fremd“, „anders“, τροφή (trophe) = „Ernährung“) ist ein Begriff aus der Biologie und bezeichnet die Eigenschaft von Lebewesen oder Zellen, den zum Aufbau ihrer Substanz benötigten Kohlenstoff aus bereits synthetisierten organischen Verbindungen zu beziehen. Die Heterotrophie steht im Gegensatz zur Autotrophie, bei der der Kohlenstoff aus anorganischen Quellen bezogen wird. Letzteres trifft vor allem auf Photosynthese betreibende Primärproduzenten (insbesondere Pflanzen) zu, deren Kohlenstoffquelle das Kohlendioxid ist.

Hétérotrophie viens du grec heteros (autre) et trophê (nourriture). L’hétérotrophie est la nécessité pour un organisme vivant de se nourrir de constituants organiques préexistants, d'origine animale ou végétale. L'hétérotrophie s'oppose en cela à la notion d'autotrophie.

Cudzożywność polega na pobieraniu gotowych związków organicznych (w przeciwieństwie do samożywności).
