Heroin (diacetylmorphine or morphine diacetate (INN)), also known as diamorphine (BAN), is an opiate analgesic synthesized by C.R Alder Wright in 1874 by adding two acetyl groups to the molecule morphine, a derivative of the opium poppy. When used in medicine it is typically used to treat severe pain, such as that resulting from a heart attack. It is the 3,6-diacetyl ester of morphine, and functions as a morphine prodrug (meaning that it is metabolically converted to morphine inside the body in order for it to work). The white crystalline form considered "pure heroin" is usually the hydrochloride salt, diacetylmorphine hydrochloride. When heroin is supplied illegally, though, it is often adulterated to a freebase form, dulling the sheen and consistency to a matte-white powder. As of 2004, roughly 87% of the world supply of opium and its derivatives, including heroin, was thought to be produced in Afghanistan. However, production in Mexico has risen six-fold from 2007 to 2011, changing that percentage and placing Mexico as the second largest opium producer in the world.

Heroin est une chanson du groupe de rock américain The Velvet Underground, écrite (en 1964) et composée par Lou Reed. Elle apparaît sur leur premier album, The Velvet Underground and Nico, sorti en 1967. Souvent considérée comme l'une des meilleurs compositions du groupe, elle décrit ouvertement une personne consommant de l'héroïne. Le critique Mark Deming a écrit : « Si Heroin n'encourage guère la prise de drogues, elle ne la condamne pas clairement non plus, ce qui la rend d'autant plus troublante pour beaucoup de personnes ». À ce sujet, Lou Reed a déclaré : « Ce n'était pas pour ou contre. C'était juste sur une prise d'héroïne du point de vue du consommateur. Je ne comprends toujours pas ce qui est si important. Il y a une chanson qui s'appelle Heroin. Et alors ? » Mais pour Maureen Tucker, la batteuse du groupe, Heroin est « notre plus grand triomphe ».

L'héroïne ou diacétylmorphine est obtenue par acétylation de la morphine, le principal alcaloïde issu du pavot. Puissant dépresseur du système nerveux central, elle provoque une forte dépendance physique et psychique, poussant à la toxicomanie. En Occident, elle est classée comme stupéfiant.

Heroina (diacetylomorfina, C₂₁H₂₃NO₅) - półsyntetyczny opioid, acetylowa pochodna morfiny, wykazująca od niej około 7-krotnie mocniejsze działanie przeciwbólowe. Heroina jest silnym agonistą receptora opioidowego μ, podobnie jak jej endogenny odpowiednik - endorfina. Dzięki grupom acetylowym heroina szybciej niż morfina przechodzi barierę krew-mózg. Jest bardzo silnym narkotycznym lekiem przeciwbólowym, który powoduje euforię i błogą apatię.
