Not to be confused with Heroine (female hero). Heroin (INN: diacetylmorphine, BAN: diamorphine) is a semi-synthetic opioid synthesized from morphine, a derivative of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. It is the 3,6-diacetyl ester of morphine (hence diacetylmorphine) and is processed by acetylation, making it a prodrug for the systemic delivery of morphine. The white crystalline form is commonly the hydrochloride salt diacetylmorphine hydrochloride. Upon crossing the blood-brain barrier, which occurs soon after introduction of the drug into the bloodstream, heroin is converted into morphine, which mimics the action of endorphins, creating a sense of well-being; the characteristic euphoria has been described as an "orgasm" centered in the gut. One of the most common methods of heroin use is via intravenous injection.

Heroin est une chanson du groupe de rock américain The Velvet Underground, écrite (en 1964) et composée par Lou Reed. Elle apparaît sur leur premier album, The Velvet Underground and Nico, sorti en 1967. Souvent considérée comme l'une des meilleurs compositions du groupe, elle décrit ouvertement une personne consommant de l'héroïne. Le critique Mark Deming a écrit : « Si Heroin n'encourage guère la prise de drogues, elle ne la condamne pas clairement non plus, ce qui la rend d'autant plus troublante pour beaucoup de personnes ». À ce sujet, Lou Reed a déclaré : « Ce n'était pas pour ou contre. C'était juste sur une prise d'héroïne du point de vue du consommateur. Je ne comprends toujours pas ce qui est si important. Il y a une chanson qui s'appelle Heroin. Et alors ? » Mais pour Maureen Tucker, la batteuse du groupe, Heroin est « notre plus grand triomphe ».

Heroina (diacetylomorfina, C21H23NO5) - półsyntetyczny opioid, acetylowa pochodna morfiny, wykazująca od niej około 7-krotnie mocniejsze działanie przeciwbólowe. Heroina jest silnym agonistą receptora opioidowego μ, podobnie jak jej endogenny odpowiednik - endorfina. Dzięki grupom acetylowym heroina szybciej niż morfina przechodzi barierę krew-mózg. Jest bardzo silnym narkotycznym lekiem przeciwbólowym, który powoduje euforię i błogą apatię.

L'eroina (diacetilmorfina) è una sostanza semisintetica ottenuta dall'alcaloide morfina per reazione con l'anidride acetica.La dipendenza da eroina è identica a quella da morfina, ma si instaura più in fretta e con quantitativi di sostanza più bassi. Anche le dosi letali sono più basse, per cui il rischio di overdose è maggiore.
