Heresy, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, is a "theological or religious opinion or doctrine maintained in opposition, or held to be contrary, to the Roman Catholic or Orthodox doctrine of the Christian Church, or, by extension, to that of any church, creed, or religious system, considered as orthodox. By extension, heresy is an opinion or doctrine in philosophy, politics, science, art, etc., at variance with those generally accepted as authoritative." The study of heresy is heresiology. The founder of a heresy is called a Heresiarch.

Une hérésie (du grec  haíresis, choix, préférence pour une doctrine) est d'abord une école de pensée. Le jardin d’Épicure était une telle haíresis. La traduction latine en est secta, secte. L’Antiquité n’attache pas de valeur péjorative à ces termes. La valeur péjorative est née en milieu chrétien avec les premières controverses théologiques dont témoignent Justin de Naplouse et Irénée de Lyon qui ont écrit "contre les hérésies" au . Au les empereurs prendront des mesures contre les hérétiques, volonté de monopole religieux qui interdit la liberté de croyance et la libre opinion.

Als Häresie (von griechisch αἵρεσις, haíresis „Wahl, Auswahl“) oder Heterodoxie wird in christlichen Kirchen eine Lehre bezeichnet, die im Widerspruch zur kirchlichen Lehre steht, und die mit dem Anspruch vertreten wird, die eigentliche Wahrheit des christlichen Glaubens zu sein. Häresie und Heterodoxie (Andersgläubigkeit) stehen immer im Gegensatz zu Orthodoxie (Rechtgläubigkeit). Von daher kann eine Lehre prinzipiell nur von ihren „orthodoxen“ Gegnern als häretisch bezeichnet werden, nicht von einem objektiven Standpunkt aus.

Herezja jest pojęciem zaczerpniętym z religii chrześcijańskiej i sensu stricto, odnosi się tylko do wydarzeń w obrębie chrześcijaństwa. Podobne do chrześcijańskiej herezji zjawiska zdarzały się w obrębie innych wielkich religii, mając w nich jednak inne znaczenie, inny wymiar i inne skutki. Dlatego można je określać jako herezję tylko umownie, przez analogię. W tym sensie przez herezję rozumie się poglądy jednostek bądź grupy wyznawców danej religii sprzeczne z dogmatami, podstawowymi zasadami, naukami lub ustaleniami autorytetów konstytuującymi tę religię.
