Hepatitis (plural hepatitides) is a medical condition defined by the inflammation of the liver and characterized by the presence of inflammatory cells in the tissue of the organ. The name is from the Greek hepar (ἧπαρ), the root being hepat- (ἡπατ-), meaning liver, and suffix -itis, meaning "inflammation" (c. 1727). The condition can be self-limiting (healing on its own) or can progress to fibrosis (scarring) and cirrhosis.

Als Hepatitis (Plural: Hepatitiden; von griech. hepar, ἧπαρ, Leber) wird eine Entzündung der Leber bezeichnet, für die zahlreiche Ursachen verantwortlich sein können. Führt eine andere zugrundeliegende Erkrankung zu dieser Leberentzündung, wird von einer sogenannten Begleithepatitis gesprochen.

L’hépatite (du grec hépar: foie) désigne toute inflammation aiguë ou chronique du foie. Les formes les plus connues étant les formes virales (notées de A à G) et alcoolique. Mais l'hépatite peut aussi être due à certains médicaments, un trouble du système immunitaire de l'organisme. L'hépatite est dite aiguë lors du contact de l'organisme avec le virus et chronique lorsqu'elle persiste au-delà de 6 mois après le début de l'infection. L'hépatite peut évoluer ou non vers une forme grave ou fulminante, une cirrhose ou un cancer.

Hepatit är grekiska för leverinflammation. Orsaker kan vara infektioner, autoimmunitet, läkemedel, gifter eller alkoholmissbruk. Karaktäristiskt för hepatit är att en del av leverns celler är inflammerade. Leverinflammation som varar kortare tid än 6 månader kallas akut hepatit medan en leverinflammation som pågått mer än 6 månader kallas för kronisk hepatit.

Wirusowe zapalenie wątroby, WZW (łac. Hepatitis) - choroba wątroby wywołana zakażeniem wirusowym. Często potocznie nazywana "żółtaczką", jest to jednak termin nieprawidłowy, niemedyczny oraz nieścisły, z uwagi na różnorodny przebieg wirusowych zapaleń wątroby, które mogą przebiegać bez zażółcenia powłok skórnych.

Zapalenie wątroby (łac. hepatitis) - grupa chorób wątroby o różnej etiologii, których wspólnym mianownikiem jest stan zapalny tego narządu.
