Agave fourcroydes
Henequen (Agave fourcroydes Lem.) is an agave whose leaves yield a fiber also called henequen which is suitable for rope and twine, but not of as high a quality as sisal. Alternative spellings are Henequin and Heniquen. It is the major plantation fiber agave of eastern Mexico, being grown extensively in Yucatán, Veracruz, and southern Tamaulipas. It is also used to make Licor del henequén, a traditional Mexican alcoholic drink.

Sisal (vezel)
Sisal is een tropische vezel en wordt vooral voor touw, borstels en vloerbedekking gebruikt.

Sisal wordt gewonnen uit de bladeren van plantensoorten die tot het geslacht Agave uit de Agavenfamilie behoren:

  • Sisal, Agave, Agavenfamilie Agavaceae
    • Sisal echte, Agave sisalana Perrine,
    • Maguey of Manilleense sisal, Agave cantula Roxb.,
    • Witte sisal of Yucatánsisal, Agave fourcroydes Lem.
    • Savadoraanse sisal, Agave angustifolia Haw. var. letonae (F. W. Taylor ex Trel.) Gentry,
    • Tampicohennep, pitavezel, Agave univitatta Haw.
    • Agave lechuguilla Torr.

サイザルアサ
アサの仲間ではないが、歴史的に最も使われてきた繊維である麻にちなんでサイザルアサと命名された。「サイザル」は以前よくこの繊維が船で積み出しされていたユカタン半島のサイザル港にちなむ。

長さ 1.5-2.0m の剣のような形の葉からなるロゼットを形成する。若い葉の縁には細かい鋸歯があるが、成熟するとともになくなる。不妊性で、分枝によって増殖する。

サイザルアサは実をつけない雑種であるが、原種はよくわかっていない。原産地であると考えられているメキシコのチアパス州に固有の小規模農産物の調査結果によると、A. angustifolia と A. kewensis の交雑種ではないかと考えられている。

Sisal
O sisal (Agave spp. Agavaceae) é uma planta utilizada para fins comerciais.

O A. sisalana é cultivado em regiões semi-áridas. No Brasil, os principais produtores são os estados da Paraíba e da Bahia.

Do sisal, utiliza-se principalmente a fibra das folhas que, após o beneficiamento, é destinada majoritariamente à indústria de cordoaria (cordas, cordéis, tapetes etc).
