De term hennep slaat meestal op variëteiten die niet geschikt zijn voor de productie van drugs. Deze laatste groep duidt men veelal aan met cannabis of marihuana.De plant is tweehuizig. Naast mannelijke en vrouwelijk planten, treft men ook hermafrodieten. Deze vrouwelijke planten ontwikkelen onderaan mannelijke bloemen en kunnen zo zichzelf bevruchten. Hun zaad is eenzijdig vrouwelijk. Hun nakomelingen zijn onvruchtbaar.
