In Western music, harmony is the use and study of pitch simultaneity, and therefore chords, actual or implied, in music. The study of harmony may often refer to the study of harmonic progressions, the movement from one pitch simultaneity to another, and the structural principles that govern such progressions. In Western Music, harmony often refers to the "vertical" aspects of music, distinguished from ideas of melodic line, or the "horizontal" aspect. For this reason, considerations of counterpoint or polyphony are often distinguished from those of harmony, though contrapuntal writing of the common practice period of western music is often conceived and defined in terms of underlying harmonic motion. Harmonik (von lat.-griech. harmonia, „Zusammenfügung, Einklang“) ist ein umfassender Begriff der Musiktheorie und -praxis für den Zusammenklang verschiedener Töne. Sie ist einer der Parameter der Musik, der die vertikale Komponente der Musik beschreibt. In der Antike deckt sich die Harmonik ganz mit der Theorie der Tonsysteme (siehe Philolaos und Aristoxenos). Seit der Entwicklung der mehrstimmigen Musik engte sich die Bedeutung der Harmonik mehr und mehr auf den gleichzeitigen Zusammenklang verschiedener Stimmen ein. In dieser heute vorherrschenden engeren Bedeutung umfasst Harmonik alle stilistischen Formen des Zusammenklangs von Musik, beginnend bei der frühen Mehrstimmigkeit des europäischen Mittelalters bis hin zu Klangstrukturen der Avantgarde. Wie die Mehrstimmigkeit ist die Harmonik daher eine primär abendländisch-europäische Entwicklung.

Harmonika - jeden z podstawowych elementów dzieła muzycznego; dotyczy współbrzmienia dźwięków i ich połączeń uporządkowanych według określonych reguł. Rozróżnia się harmonikę klasyczną, harmonikę jazzową, harmonikę serialną, harmonikę dodekafoniczną. Ze względu na rozwój historyczny muzyki wyróżniamy:Harmonikę modalną (IX do XVI w.) - opierała się ona na ośmiu skalach kościelnych, charakteryzowała się specyficznym łączeniem akordów i prowadzeniem głosów, stosowaniem charakterystycznych dla tej epoki technik kompozytorskich, np. organum, discantus, gymel, a także faux-bourdon (równoległe prowadzenie tercji i sekst).Harmonikę funkcyjną dur-moll (od XVI mniej więcej do końca XIX w.) - opiera się na dwóch skalach: durowej i molowej; na I, IV i V stopniu tych skal budowane są trójdźwięki takie jak tonika, subdominanta i dominanta; Trójdźwięki poboczne budowane są na pozostałych stopniach (II, III, VI, VII). Między akordami istnieją ściśle określone stosunki. Dysonanse są rozwiązywane na konsonanse, a głosy muszą być prowadzone według określonych reguł (nie stosuje się np. równoległych kwint i oktaw)Harmonikę "dwudziestowieczną" (XX w.) - nie ma tu jednego, ściśle określonego systemu - kompozytor używa dowolnie wszystkich współbrzmień według swojego uznania i gustu. Jedenym ze sposobów porządkowania materiału muzycznego (Berg, Schoenberg, Webern) była Dodekafonia.Harmonikę sonorystyczną (XX/XXI w.) - odejście od systemu równomiernie temperowanego. używanie wszystkich możliwych współbrzmień i wysokości dźwięków, które traktowane są dowolnie jako plamy dźwiękowe, dominują dysonanse, w tym współbrzmienia o najbardziej skupionym układzie dźwięków, tzw. klastery.

Col nome di armonia si indica il ramo della teoria musicale che studia la sovrapposizione "verticale" (simultanea) dei suoni, la loro reciproca concatenazione (accordi) e la loro funzione all'interno della tonalità. Gli armonici sono frequenze che vanno ad incidere sull'altezza principale del suono e creano il "colore" (timbro). Essi sono diversi in ogni persona, poichè sono caratteristiche umane diverse per tutti.
