Hardcore punk, now commonly known as hardcore, is a subgenre of punk rock that originated in North America in the late 1970s. In North America, hardcore punk emerged with a new sound, which was generally thicker, heavier, and faster than standard punk rock. It is sometimes characterized by short, loud, and passionate songs about serious topics such as government, capitalism, anarchism, war and the hardcore subculture itself.

Le punk hardcore, souvent simplifié en hardcore, est un sous-genre du punk rock apparu en Amérique du Nord à la fin des années 1970. Il est considéré comme la première vague d'artistes de punk radicalisés et engagés, devenant plus souterrains ou inconditionnels, accélérant les tempos et raccourcissant les morceaux, notamment en réaction à la commercialisation de certains artistes punk. Le son est plus épais, plus lourd et plus rapide que le style de punk rock des années 1970. Il est caractérisé par des chansons courtes, fortes et passionnées.

Der Hardcore-Punk (zumeist einfach Hardcore oder HC abgekürzt) entstand Ende der 1970er Jahre in den USA und unabhängig davon in Großbritannien als radikalere und schnellere Weiterentwicklung des Punk Rocks. Die ursprüngliche Hardcore-Ära gilt seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre als beendet, als Hardcore begann, sich in unterschiedliche Subgenres aufzuspalten. Seit dem gibt es zum Einen "Old School"-Gruppen, die sich am ursprünglichen Hardcore-Punk orientierten. Zum Anderen entwickelten sich zu jener Zeit Bands, die stärker andere Musikstile, so auch Metal, miteinbezogen und deshalb eher dem Post-Hardcore zugeschrieben werden. Diese sich dennoch stark mit Punkrock-identifizierenden Bands wurden damals als "New School"-Hardcore bezeichnet.

Hardcore, hard core, akronim HC lub hardcore punk – określenie stylu muzycznego, powstałego pod koniec lat 70. XX w. w Stanach Zjednocznych. Muzyka hardcore w pierwotnym wydaniu to punk rock doprowadzony do ekstremum – szybkie, krótkie utwory z ekspresyjnym tekstami, często o przesłaniu politycznym. Przedstawiciele tego okresu to m.in. Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, The Germs, Dead Kennedys, D.O.A. i in. Później następowała ewolucja gatunku muzycznego, m.in. pojawienie się nurtu crossover, czyli połączenia punka, hardcore'u i thrash metalu, przykładowo nagrania grupy D.R.I. Z ekstremalnych odmian hardcore'u powstały również d-beat (np. Discharge) i grindcore (Napalm Death, S.O.D.). Obecnie coraz więcej zespołów hardcore'owych czerpie inspirację z heavy metalu (p. The Exploited, Discharge). W uproszczeniu zespoły nawiązujące do stylistyki punk określa się mianem oldschool, natomiast te, które grają bardziej nowoczesną odmianę hardcore to newschool. Połączenie hardcore'u z metalem to metalcore, zaś połączenie z death metalem często określa się jeszcze inną nazwą – deathcore.
