Gabber (IPA pronunciation: ), gabba, or hardcore, is a style of electronic music and a subgenre of hardcore techno. The style was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in the late 1980s which makes it the cradle of the gabber culture. The essence of the gabber sound is a distorted kick sound, overdriven to the point where it becomes a square wave and makes a recognizably melodic tone. Often the Roland Alpha Juno was used to create this sound. Gabber tracks typically include samples and synthesised melodies with the typical tempo ranging from 160 to 220 bpm. Violence, drugs and profanity are common themes in gabber, perceptible through its samples and lyrics, often screamed, pitch shifted or distorted.

La définition de ce style est assez variable : En Europe continentale, on définit le gabber comme étant une vision plus dansante et commerciale de la techno hardcore, propagée entre autres par les soirées et compilations Thunderdome. Gabber (im Niederländischen []; englisch []; deutsch meist einfach []) ist eine schnelle und harte Variante des Hardcore Techno mit ca. 180 bis 250 bpm. Charakteristisch für Gabber sind verzerrte, lang ausklingende Bassdrums, oft von der TR-909. Begleitend kommen grobe, harte und synthetische Klänge und Samples hinzu.

Gabber (znany też jako hardcore), często nazywany też Gabba. To jeden z najbardziej ekstremalnych gatunków muzyki elektronicznej za którego pionierów uważani są Belgowie. Gabber wywodzi się z muzyki i subkultury rave, tyle iż za prostoplastę tego stylu są uważane utwory house które powstały na przełomie roku 1987/1988. Zwiększono w nich tempo do ok. 135 - 145 BPM oraz wyostrzono ślad perkusyjny (beat). Jednak prawdziwa eksplozja tego stylu to lata 1991 - 1992, wtedy to w Belgii powstało wiele klasyków i kultowych nagrań: Holy Noise - Get Down Everybody, Nightmare czy Misteria - Who Kill JFK. Gabber bardzo szybko przeniósł się do sąsiedniej Holandii, gdzie dj-e DJ Paul Elstak i Dark Raver (dziś uważani za najlepszych hardcore'owych dj-ów i producentów)przyspieszyli tempo utworów do ok. 160 - 170 BPM, oraz przesterowali dźwięk uderzenia. Tzw. motyw basowy (łaczony z charakterystycznym "noise'em" ang. hałas) startuje równo z uderzeniem perkusji co daje w połączeniu z rytmem 4/4 niesłychanie mocny i energiczny beat.

Con il termine gabber si indicano parte delle persone che ascoltano la musica hardcore e partecipano ai rave party hardcore, i quali si svolgono spesso in aree occupate, come capannoni abbandonati di fabbriche.Il termine è nato in Olanda e deriva dalla parola yiddish khaver, che significa amico. Sembra che un ragazzo appassionato di musica hardcore volesse entrare in un club di Amsterdam dove il buttafuori gli disse, "No gabber, non puoi entrare". Si ritiene altrimenti che la parola derivi direttamente dall'inglese con il significato di "casinista" (nel senso buono del termine)
