tenir
lat. tenere;
The ultimate root here is Proto-Indo-European *ten- "stretch," found in "tension," "tendon," "tenuous," and "thin." In Sanskrit it turns up in tantram "loom" (relating it to English "tantrum" is too much of a stretch) and Hindi "sitar," the stringed musical instrument whose name is based on the Persian variant of the same root, tar "string." "Baritone" is based on the Greek word tonos "string, sound." tan-idan (pbp.)
